27A – Reading Reflection No. 3
by: Scott Adams
How To Fail at Almost
Everything and Still Win Big
What is the
general theme or argument of the book?
The general theme of the book is how a person can fight through struggles and still be able to conquer. It focuses on giving advice on how his own failures lead him to experiences that helped him get to where he is today. He goes into detail of his failures such as in his restaurant business, failed investments, and failed interviews that out him in circumstances to make mistakes and grow from them. The advice he gives explains to the reader that you have to focus on strategies instead of just setting goals.
How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT3003?
This novel related to the class because it shows how to become successful with going out and being alright with failing. It really touched base with what we learned in this class during the workshop, which is, going out and taking action and not waiting to have a perfect strategy. Also, this book goes through all of his experiences, and he gives examples of learning how to network and what happens during these interactions. He does this by exemplifying each circumstance, and instead of just seeing a problem we can begin to see who has the problem, and how it can be solved. One major importance that I took away from this is selling yourself with a positive attitude and having different strategies.
If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
I would make an assignment designed to highlight some of the steps in his light and how it can relate to their own. The assignment you would have to read the book to get the knowledge. The person would do a walk through of each business venture, and highlight different steps he took to succeed., and what strategy would not work, or what he could have done better. Afterward the person would reflect on how they would have went through with the business venture.
What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectation?
I did not know that the cartoonist was a comic book author for the famous cartoon "Dilbert". On top of all of this he had a hand impairment. It gave me more respect for him, and all of the struggles that he had to endure.
Reflection:
After reading this book I have a knowledge of always having a strategy because it will improve my career success, trying something new everyday and just being happy with the process of failing to succeed. Adams taught me that strategy can determine and lead to success and being happy in the process and not always constantly seeking the end of something.
I think it is cool how this post relates to your last post regarding failure and enjoyed comparing the two. I feel like it gave more insight to the previous post as well. I also like the idea you had described above for an in-class exercise. It is both reflective and beneficial to the students in understanding the process of entrepreneurship.
